What Makes Chinese Herbal Medicine Different?

Chinese herbal medicine with acupuncture

The script describes Chinese herbal medicine as increasing the body’s ability to maintain body-and-spirit health and to balance energy.

Acupuncturists licensed in the State of California have extensive training in both acupuncture AND Chinese herbal medicine.  We have over 800 didactic hours of training in Chinese herbal medicine, not to mention many hours of herbal training in our internships and in continuing education classes. In addition, Dr. Foster has undergone national testing and has earned a Diplomate in Chinese Herbal Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Unlike what you may find on supermarket shelves Chinese herbal formulas are different from western herbal formulas in that most of the time several herbs are used in a formula, sometimes as many as 15 herbs. This is so each formula is specifically designed for the whole person (i.e., it will treat one condition while making sure it agrees with a person’s digestion). The herbs are combined not only for each herb’s individual effect, but also for the effect of the herbs together as a group. The companies we use to provide our herbal formulas are held to the highest of U.S. standards. For more info, click here to visit their website, Evergreen Herbs.

When should I use herbs and/or natural supplements?

Herbal formulas and supplements can be used alone or in conjunction with Acupuncture. After carefully considering your condition, as well as any prescription drugs you are taking, we may decide herbs would expedite the healing process. If you would like an herbal consult and not an acupuncture session, please let us know when we schedule your appointment.
